How to Diagnose Random Performance Incidents Using ASH Data

Even in the Oracle Cloud, rare and random short-lived performance incidents can occur. These incidents present Oracle DBAs with a challenge. In this presentation, I begin with why ASH (active session history) is so powerful, how it works and how we use ASH to solve complex performance incidents. Using only four free scripts, I will lead you step-by-step through an incident analysis process. Plus, I will show you how to visualize the performance situation using a Python script.

Tune That SQL. Now, What Do I Do?

You may know Autonomous Health Framework (AKA Trace File Analyzer) as that thing you have to run before Oracle will assign on your new service requests. Not ringing a bell? What if I said it's the tool that alerts about being over 180 days old every time you run it? Yup, that's it! Few may appreciate that AHF is more than a stepping stone to getting SRs assigned – it's the fast track for identifying and solving them! Fewer still realize that helping Oracle Support find and fix problems is a fraction of what it does (and an unimpressive piece at that). Simply put, using AHF only to generate diagnostics for service requests is like carrying a Swiss Army Knife just for the toothpick!

Tuning SQL statements in Oracle is more of an art than a science. This session will cover the basic tools and steps to tuning a SQL statement, starting with finding the SQL statement and collecting the right information. How does the Optimizer work to transform SQL into an execution plan? What information is an execution plan trying to show? Finally, what are some things that can be tuned and Oracle's tools to make things easier? If you are new to tuning SQL in Oracle or trying to freshen up your skills, this session should have enough information for everyone.

Player Piano: The World of ADW & ATP

Emerging IT trends for the cloud have the power to transform organizations. A key cloud service offering has arrived in the data management and analytics space. Oracle Autonomous Data Warehouse (ADW) Cloud & Oracle Autonomous Transaction Processing (ATP) simplifies the provisioning, maintenance, and optimization of data warehouse workloads in the cloud and promotes low touch for database administrators and load and pull approaches to data analytics.

In this session, learn about ADW/ATP provisioning and data loading, see a series of performance benchmarks and discover the process flow of start the service, define tables, load data, and then run queries. You’ll also see the world of Player Piano materialize as the DBAs in their ghost shirts ride into the headwinds of the future.

Top 5 Considerations for Migrating Databases to Oracle Cloud

Join us in this educational session as we help you navigate and plan to move your databases to Oracle Cloud, along with useful tips before considering database as a service, infrastructure as a service, or platform as a service option for your critical applications.

This session will discuss Oracles Cloud strategy, migration paths to your journey to the cloud, and hidden gems in Oracle Cloud to simplify adoption. Lastly, we will break down many of Oracle's innovations that will impact your cloud journey in terms of risk and cost.

Whether you belong to a large enterprise or a one-person startup, cloud-based databases are now a reality or part of your short-term technology roadmap. Like every major initiative, having a plan and executing it to perfection is key to realizing the benefits offered by the cloud adoption, the absence of which could result in unplanned and unexpected downtime for your business's critical applications.

AAS Predictions Using Deep Learning Neural Networks With Sysmetric Data

Smooth database operations are hindered when unexpected performance incidents occur. What if we could predict an incident was likely to occur within the next few minutes? This can be a reality by using Oracle Sysmetric data with deep learning neural networks.

This presentation will begin with recognizing patterns and how neural networks try to do the same. Then we’ll look at Sysmetric data, understanding and leveraging its time-series nature. Now we’re ready to understand why neural networks and deep learning are sought after in performance prediction.

An Oracle Cloud Free Tier or Gmail account is enough for a mind-blowing graphical demonstration of making real-time performance predictions. You can download the single file necessary to replicate my demonstration, enabling you to tinker and explore!

Once you get a glimpse of what is possible, a new world of performance monitoring and alerting will appear. Join me for a fascinating applied ML presentation for the future Oracle professional.

Getting Started with Oracle on Docker

Linux containers are a fast, flexible, and portable solution widely used for applications and services. They are not as well known in the database community, and database administrators are only beginning to recognize the speed, flexibility, and portability advantages containers have over physical and virtual hosts. With containers, DBAs can rapidly provision databases on minimal hardware, even a laptop for testing, practicing and perfecting disaster recovery and upgrade procedures, preparing for certifications, and more! Containers separate data from software, leading to new, modular approaches to data and database management, cloning and refreshing data, and patching and upgrades.

This is a practical introduction to Docker for Oracle DBAs. You’ll learn terminology and how containers differ from virtual machines and witness the speed and versatility of Docker. Then, I’ll cover step-by-step how to build and run Oracle databases on Docker, make them visible on the network, and protect and persist its data. The session concludes with examples for customizing your database containers and examples of orchestrating multi-database environments for Data Guard, Sharding, and more.

Deep Dive into SQL Tuning

Have you had that one SQL statement where you couldn't figure out what the Oracle optimizer was thinking? In this session, we will take a deep dive into doing a trace and talk about some of the sledgehammer methods to influence the optimizer. You may not find the solution to that one nagging SQL, but we will cover how the optimizer frustrated you. Using these tools, along with Oracles SQL Plan Management or Profiles, you may be able to achieve your goals.

Many developers do not understand how to dig into SQL beyond the basic explanation plan. This session will cover the somewhat gory details of going deep inside how the optimizer is making decisions.

Case Study: Payment Processing Company Achieves 100% Uptime Migrating & Upgrading Database to Exadata

Learn how one of the largest payment processing companies migrated their mission-critical databases to the latest Exadata with zero downtime. While migrating to the latest Exadata platform, we upgraded databases from Oracle 12c (12.1) to Oracle Database 19c. Technical architecture details will be discussed, how ultra-high availability was accomplished, lessons learned will be shared, and most importantly, how we mitigated risk for performance.

Many challenges and hurdles had to be overcome since the databases served a global financial client base. Production database migration to the Exadata environment had to be performed with zero downtime architecture with a live cutover while continuing to process application data. Exadata clusters consisted of two sets of ten node RAC compute nodes across two data centers.

Leveraged technologies include Datapump, GoldenGate, Real Application Testing, 10 Node RAC Cluster, Global Data Services, and 10 Node RAC Cluster Exadata replicating data to another 10 Node RAC Cluster Exadata

Database Security Using Docker Secrets

Running databases or clients in containers may unintentionally expose credentials and proprietary data. Information passed through runtime arguments, saved in Dockerfiles, or copied during image builds is persisted and visible. Commit those assets to public repositories like GitHub or Docker Hub, and you’ve shared those secrets with the world. Fortunately, there is a way to protect private information in images and containers that integrates seamlessly with existing workflows Docker Secrets!

In this session, I’ll demonstrate how Docker Secrets protects passwords, configurations, and other confidential information when building images and running containers. While this session focuses on implementing Docker Secrets to protect databases, the information can be applied equally to any container application that uses or stores privileged information.
- How attributes are mapped and exposed during build and run operations
- Common misconceptions surrounding data handling and persistence during image builds
- Techniques for securing and managing sensitive files and data using Docker Secrets
- Methods of implementing secrets into existing code and processes
